Burdur Mehmet Akif Ersoy University (MAKÜ) Faculty of Dentistry touched a patient's life with a successful operation. Ahmet Özkan, who had been suffering from unbearable facial pain for about 10 years due to Trigeminal Neuralgia, regained his health with a surgical intervention performed at MAKÜ.
“He couldn't eat, drink water, or sleep”
Dr. Lecturer Büşra Karaca from the Department of Oral, Dental, and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Faculty of Dentistry, who performed the operation, provided information about the patient's condition:
“Our patient came to us with severe burning and stabbing pain like being struck by lightning or electric shock. The attacks had become so frequent that he couldn't eat, drink water, or sleep; he was unable to continue his daily life. Despite receiving medication treatment for many years, our patient did not benefit, so we applied a more permanent solution. By surgically removing the nerve causing the pain, our patient's painful process ended.”
Karaca emphasized that positive developments were observed during the 3-month follow-up period after the operation, saying, “Our patient can now sleep comfortably, eat, and continue his daily life healthily. We are very happy to have been able to heal him.”
“I was reborn”
Ahmet Aslan, describing the pain he endured for 10 years, expressed his happiness after the operation with the following words:
“I had unbearable pain in my face for years. I knocked on every door, went to every hospital, but couldn't find a cure. Finally, I came to MAKÜ Faculty of Dentistry. Here, with the interest of Ms. Büşra, Ms. Ceren, Ms. Gizem, and Mr. Enes, I underwent an operation. Thanks to this operation, my pain that lasted for 10 years ended. Now, I no longer have night attacks, nor do I struggle while eating, drinking water, or speaking. I am very comfortable now; I can drink water, eat, and have no problems speaking. I sincerely thank all my professors and everyone involved. I am also very grateful to my wife who was by my side during this process. It was the professors of MAKÜ Faculty of Dentistry who saved me from this disease. Thanks to them, I was reborn.”
