MAKÜ will investigate the effects of climate change on the elderly

Burdur Mehmet Akif Ersoy University (MAKÜ) Center for Aging Studies (YAŞAM) will focus on the effects of climate change on elderly individuals in its new research period.

Center Director Prof. Dr. Deniz Say Şahin stated that they conduct academic research on different topics every year and mentioned that they will examine the effects of environmental changes due to climate change on the elderly through field studies.

With the planned research during the process in which Turkey will host COP31 in 2026, it is aimed to reveal how the elderly are affected by changing environmental conditions.

Field visits provide resources for research

The center monitors the needs and problems faced by elderly individuals by visiting them in their living places at regular intervals throughout the year. While evaluating daily living conditions and their social environments during the interviews, the experiences of the elderly are listened to.

The observations obtained during the visits and the shared experiences create a data source for academic studies. With this data, it is aimed to better understand the changing needs of the elderly and to transfer the obtained information to practices in the field of aging.

With these meetings, which also include World Elderly Day, the aim is to support the social lives of elderly individuals.
